Portworx Data Services (PDS) continues expanding its capabilities to help customers in deploying, scaling, managing and self-service popular databases or data platforms on new-age containers instead of legacy infrastructure and its constraints. We are now live with PDS release 24.07.01. And the new PDS release comes with a trove of new features and functionality added that round out capabilities around areas of security, access control, ease of use and of course, data-services.
- Access Control:
For many solutions that exist in the market today, every user needs admin access rights to be able to deploy, manage, scale or backup data services or data bases. Which isn’t realistic when as an enterprise, you want users to provide self-service and independence. Hence Portworx Data Services (PDS) has introduced ‘projects’ in this release. Where-in platform admins can give access to specific namespaces and clusters which users can view and control data-services on as a ‘project admin’. They can then invite other members of the team to use PDS and of course data-services in PDS, whilst using templates provided by admins which control the resource, storage and application properties that can be used. - Ease of Use:
We’ve listened to feedback and re-hauled the user interface for Portworx Data Services (PDS) from top to bottom, for a better experience. Starting from the URL for accessing PDS SaaS - which is now simply - cloud.portworx.io ; the interface now has a vibrant light theme with improved navigation and iconography for getting databases on containers running and managed faster than ever. - Security:
Portworx Data Services (PDS) now supports PX-Security capabilities leveraging Portworx Enterprise for ensuring secure access by data-services with the container storage. Protecting against malicious requests being made to your deployed data services, by securing the communication between Kubernetes and Portworx storage. - Data Services:
Portworx Data Services (PDS) has a vast folio of data services with over a dozen - databases, message brokers and data stores; that you can choose to deploy, manage & secure on your Kubernetes infrastructure. Updates for data-services are now decoupled from the PDS release process, hence now you’ll find faster updates rolling out from Portworx, allowing you to use PDS 1-click updates to ensure you have the latest bits for your DB running.
Apart from the above highlighted features, the underpinning of Portworx Data Services (PDS) has been rehoused with new Portworx platform components. Leading to a new PDS architecture which can automatically update its components without user action. And provide an integrated API surface/kit, to allow for programmatic usage of PDS within enterprise CI/CD pipelines and admin scripts.
